Your Medicare Options

Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage Plans differ per carrier, but all function in the same way. Every insurance company that offers MAPD plans, has a $0 premium option. That’s right – you’re not paying anything for the plan! So what’s the catch?

In exchange for little to no monthly cost, you will pay small co-pays at your doctor, specialist and hospital visits and may have a yearly deductible. There may be a network you must receive your care from (excluding emergency room visits) and referrals are sometimes required.

MAPD plans include your prescription drug coverage, some dental and vision coverage and provide other benefits such as OTC credits, free gym memberships and transportation reimbursement.

Medicare Supplement Plans

Medicare Supplement Plans are named by letters and all function the exact same way, regardless of carrier. The only thing that differs per company is the base price, monthly premium and discount schedule.

Plan G and Plan N are the most popular Supplement plan options due to their complete coverage and little to no out-of-pocket costs. The premiums typically range from $100-$200/month, but you can have zero co-pays, coinsurance or deductibles.

Supplement plans work hand-in-hand with Original Medicare. The leftover Medicare-approved costs not covered by Parts A & B, will be covered by this plan. Prescription drug coverage must be purchased separately.

Prescription Drug Plans

Prescription Drug Plans are a requirement for all Medicare-eligible individuals. They are included in Advantage plans, but need to be purchased separately with Supplement plans.

These plans are offered at a small monthly premium and cover a large part of the costs associated with prescriptions. The price varies based on needs and carrier. Some medications will be covered completely, while others will require a co-pay or coinsurance depending on what tier they fall in.
